The River Wear played host to some unusual helmsmen recently, as council workers took to the water in fancy dress to raise money for charity.
The council fund raising teams took part in the Dragon Boat Regatta and donned fancy dress costumes to suit the themes of their teams: the 'North Tyneside Superheroes' and 'Pink Ladies'.
According to the regional news site, New Guardian, the North Tyneside team this year retained its title as The Team of the Day – an award given to the participants that best encapsulate the mood of the day.
North Tyneside chief executive Andrew Kerr, who raced in the Grease inspired Pink Ladies boat, said: "I was delighted to see so many people from the council get involved, not only those who dressed up and took part but also those who pledged their financial support to raise much needed funds for local charities.
"Winning 'team of the day' showed the spirit and enthusiasm that we have within North Tyneside Council and I have no doubt we'll be back next year to defend our title."
11 teams took part in the Regatta, with teams representing a wide range of nearby councils, including North Tyneside, Sunderland, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton and Darlington, Newcastle, and Redcar and Cleveland. Also taking part in the event were Cleveland Fire Brigade, Deloitte, Northgate Managed Services and Turner & Townsend Project Management.
Organised by Deloitte, the Regatta successfully raised more than £12,500 for the North of England's Children's Cancer Research Fund (NECCR) and Newcastle RVI's Children's Cancer Award.
