Sunny weather added a boost to Wigton and Moss Bay's annual carnivals as hundreds of fancy dress attendees made the most of the celebrations.
Wigton boasted a wide range of fancy dress outfits last weekend, at its tenth annual carnival since it's re-launch in 2000. Crowds lined the streets on Saturday June 27 to enjoy a procession of unusual floats, led by a fire engine and Penrith Town Band playing a rendition of the BBC's series Dad's Army.
Local paper the News & Star reports that the colourful parade included a wide variety of floats and costumes inspired by magic and fantasy, as well as famous characters from films and TV shows. Elaine Lynch, a steward of the event and town councillor, said: "It looked great, absolutely fantastic. We had more floats involved this year, including some really unusual ones.
"It gets better all the time. People like to get involved. It's been really good for the spirit of Wigton and the community."
Moss Bay carnival has also been hailed as a success. In fact, organisers have claimed that this year's celebrations were the best in the event's history. Floats featured in this parade were cheered on by school girls in cheerleader fancy dress costumes and superheroes such as Bananaman accompanied the procession.
The splendid procession, also held on Saturday 27, was enjoyed by hundreds of locals and organiser Alyson Hodgson said: "The whole day has exceeded our expectations. The weather is great, the children look amazing and everything has gone off without a hitch.
"This has to be the best Moss Bay Carnival we have had. Everyone has worked so hard to make it a success and it really was."
